Boulder Junior: In Detail

Program Highlights

Authentic Nature-Based Activities: In all areas of our program, we promote opportunities for learning about and interacting directly with the natural environment.

Team Building: Throughout the session, counselors present cabin groups with age- and ability- appropriate teambuilding challenges. Through these experiences campers practice working together and listening to each other.

Hiking: While hiking on the beautiful trails of Boulder County’s OSMP, campers are lead by at least 2 staff per group that teach Leave No Trace environmental ethics, hiking techniques, trail etiquette, and outdoor games.

Swimming: At Spruce Pool, campers participate in a swimming skills evaluation on pool day and are allowed into areas of the kids' pool according to ability. We also play like crazy in the water features that surround the pool!

Climbing: AO Junior campers have an opportunity to climb during the session on Altogether Outdoor's 26 foot portable rock climbing tower. At their age, it's almost more fun being lowered by the auto-belay system as it is to climb up!

  • Junior Campers have amazing and full days with age appropriate experiences!
  • With water bottles of their own design in hand, the Junior week gives them...
  • ... a chance to discover more than they can at home in the summer.
  • To start, we make sure everyone's got sunscreen & we are on our way with...
  • ... a bus ride to a natural space, like an Open Space / Mountain Park site!
  • We can learn from a naturalist...
  • ... in really hands-on ways.
  • Things really get jumping throughout the camp week!
  • And once everyone feels comfortable with each other and camp - we climb!
  • A great fit for this age group, our 26-foot tower is the newest in town!
  • We'll also cool off at the Spruce Pool, playing big group games...
  • ... with Junior Leaders and staff.
  • We'll do some camp week theme-related crafts. (Check out the Dino Egg!)
  • And Marble-ized Paper!

Just wanted to let you know that Kyra LOVES camp! She's having a fantastic time and, when she was invited to go to play with a friend in the afternoon this week, she said, no way - I don't want to miss a minute of Camp! Your staff are doing a great job!

- Laura, parent of two AO campers since 2008

The camp counselors at AO are some of the most professional and best trained that I've experienced in the area. I always felt my children were safe and in good hands with counselors who pay close attention.

- Juliette, mother of two AO campers

I really love your camp because you are just back to the basics of summer. My camper plays outside and has fun every day!

- Ricki, mother of two AO girls

In each one-week Boulder Junior session, campers have fun making friends and connecting with their counselors and nature.

Based near downtown Boulder, these young campers are outside as much as possible, including trips to Open Space and Mountain Parks, State Parks and the Spruce Pool.

The highlights of this intentionally planned program include: hiking, fishing, teambuilding, crafts, stories and camp songs.

Our Junior Program is based near downtown (at Whittier Elementary on 20th and Spruce), but once we get on the bus in the morning, we are off to nearby natural areas such as:

  • Chautauqua
  • Mesa Trailhead
  • Dowdy Draw
  • NCAR
  • Eldorado Canyon
  • and more...

At these areas we hike, explore, learn and play!

By midday we return to our basecamp for much-needed downtime with a craft, story or quiet game.

Our Junior campers have a busy week of activities. Here are just some of the highlights:

There will almost always be additional counselors on the bus to help Ed supervise, lead songs, and check in with each camper.

Daily Transitions

Morning Greetings: For some young campers, good-byes for the day can be a little tricky. Or sometimes campers are just tired! Counselors will greet you and get your camper on the bus and connected to friends and staff.

Afternoon Farewells: Mornings are all about a quick start. Afternoons are all about a quiet finish. Campers are tired, so after a story, parents usually arrive just in time to watch campers sing their final camp songs and connect with a counselor to hear about the day.
